CyberWorks: Cyber Florida's Cybersecurity Workforce Development Program

Cyber Florida, also known as the Florida Center for Cybersecurity, was established by the state legislature in June 2014 to position Florida and its related workforce as a national leader in cybersecurity through education, research, and community engagement. Housed at the University of South Florida (USF), the center’s primary mission areas are focused on education, research, and outreach for the state of Florida preparing and enhancing the cybersecurity workforce. Cybercrime is a defining challenge of our time, and the danger is growing exponentially as we become more digitally dependent. The need to protect our nation’s businesses, organizations, and citizens from a relentless cyber threat has created a national demand for an immense, highly skilled workforce. Cybersecurity professionals are in demand, and the need far outweighs the supply.

Cyber Florida re-launched their cybersecurity workforce development program, New Skills for a New Fight (NSNF), to meet the job supply demand and hopes to diversify the career field by offering career training for transitioning military veterans and first responders and those who identify as women, people of color, and/or people with disabilities. The 2021 iteration of NSNF was part of a grant funded by the National Security Agency (NSA) to establish a national certificate-based cybersecurity workforce development program through a partnership with ten other higher education institutions that were designated as Centers for Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity (CAE-C) hosting similar local training programs.  JP Morgan Chase is another key supporter providing additional funding to help in the development of the NSNF program to enhance the student experience.  In collaboration with the Florida Center for Instructional Technology also housed at the University of South Florida, Cyber Florida created a model cybersecurity talent pipeline by providing professional development experiences and a high-quality curriculum aligned to the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) Cybersecurity Workforce Framework work role of Cyber Defense Analyst.  CyberWorks is the expansion of New Skills for a New Fight, the twelve-week virtual program preparing adult students to enter the cybersecurity workforce as Tier 1 security operations analysts.
